I recently published the latest issue of the magazine Metszet in which, for a change, I also published an article about the building in addition to the photos.

Here is a short extract:

“When I first saw the student home in Pápa, what came to my mind, as other writings have said, was how well it fits into the late Baroque built environment as a contemporary building, how there is no sign of competition or ostentation. And my second thought is how, despite all this, how different it is from the basic assumptions of the contemporary spirit. Of course, today’s approach cannot and should not be taken to account in the architecture of the past, but as a layman it was striking to me how different, simply put, how welcoming and open the latest addition to a complex of institutions with a long history is. To put it mildly, when I think of the institution as a concept in general, these are not the adjectives that come to mind.”

Nemrég jött ki a metszet magazin legújabb száma melyben a a változatosság kedvéért a fotókon túl egy cikket is publikáltam az épületről.

Íme egy rövid részlet:

“Amikor először megláttam a pápai diák otthont, az jutott eszembe, amit más írások is megfogalmaznak, hogy kortárs épületként mennyire jól illeszkedik a későbarokk stílusú épített környezetbe, mennyire nincs nyoma a versengésnek, feltűnés szándékának. A második gondolatom pedig, hogy mindezek ellenére, a mai korszellem alapvetései mellett is mennyire mást állít. Természetesen a mai szemléletet nem lehet és nem is szabad a régi korok építészetén számonkérni, csupán laikusként szembeötlő volt számomra, hogy a nagy múltú intézmény komplexum legújabb tagja mennyire mást, egyszerűen fogalmazva barátságosságot, nyitottságot sugároz. Finoman szólva, amikor úgy általában az intézményre mint fogalomra gondolok, nem ezek a jelzők jutnak eszembe.”

Over the weekend, we watched a documentary on Mubi about William Kentridge, which he made during the pandemic. It was a fantastic experience, I recommend it to everyone, it’s called Self Portrait as a Coffee Pot. It’s fascinating to watch the almost continuous harmony between intuition and movement. An artist who lives and creates in almost every moment.

A hétvégén megnéztük a Mubin a William Kentridge-ről szóló dokumentumfilmet, amit még a pandémia alatt készített. Fantasztikus élmény volt, mindenkinek ajánlom, a címe: Önarckép mint kávéskanna. Lenyűgöző figyelni a szinte folyamatos összhangot az intuitív állapot és a mozdulat között. Egy művész, aki szinte minden pillanatban él és alkot.

Back in the summer, my dear friend Dalma asked me to photograph her latest installation, ‘Used, Unsused’. Some thoughts on the concept:

Artist’s concept text: The project ‘Used | Unused’ focuses on the unintended changes of materials resulting from repetitive human interactions.Through spatial observations at the Akademie der Künste (AdK) and the Axel Springer Campus, I documented material and color-based compositions using photography. These visual records serve as a key source for my work. At the AdK I  meticulously cataloged material interactions, emphasizing their inherent characteristics and details. The resulting frames reveal traces of human touch — alterations that occur unintentionally. By capturing these nuances, I invite viewers to perceive the building from a different angle, appreciating the subtle shifts in material states.

My approach slightly shifted at the Axel Springer Campus. Here, I intentionally excluded contextual information from my close-up images. The goal was to strip away functionality and focus solely on materiality. Isolating objects by reducing them into mere colors and shapes we can observe their appearances more detailed. This process helped me to refine my aesthetic preferences, emphasizing texture, color, and form, which I wished to represent in my work later on.

What might be depressing, the dust, the signs of wear and tear, the signs of neglect, takes on an aesthetic quality from another perspective and from there we can even be happy about it. I had this not too complicated idea when we installed the work in the studio.

I recently received the photos from Berlin of the completed catalogue with the documentation. Meticulous care, attention, thoughtful and very sensitive work. You can see Dalma’s work here.

Még a nyáron keresett meg kedves barátom Dalma, hogy fotózzam be legfrissebb installációját, melynek címe ‘Used, Unsused’. Néhány gondolat a koncepcióról: Az Akademie der Künste (AdK) és az Axel Springer Campus területén végzett térbeli megfigyeléseken keresztül az anyagok nem szándékolt változásaira összpontosítok, amelyek az ismétlődő emberi interakciókból erednek. Ezek a vizuális feljegyzések munkám kulcsfontosságú forrásául szolgálnak. Az AdK-ban aprólékosan katalogizáltam az anyagi interakciókat, kiemelve a bennük rejlő jellemzőket és részleteket. Az így kapott képkockák az emberi érintés nyomait mutatják - az akaratlanul bekövetkező változtatásokat. Azáltal, hogy megörökítem ezeket az árnyalatokat, arra kérem a nézőket, hogy más szemszögből szemléljék az épületet, és értékeljék az anyagi állapotok finom változásait.

Az Axel Springer Campuson kissé megváltozott a megközelítésem. Itt szándékosan kizártam a kontextuális információkat a közelképekből. A cél az volt, hogy eltávolítsam a funkcionalitást, és kizárólag az anyagszerűségre koncentráljak. A tárgyak elkülönítésével, pusztán színekre és formákra redukálva őket, részletesebben megfigyelhetjük megjelenésüket. Ez a folyamat segített finomítani esztétikai preferenciáimat, kiemelve a textúrát, a színeket és a formát, amelyeket a későbbiekben a munkáimban kívántam megjeleníteni.

Ami esetleg lehangol, a por, az elhasználódás, a mellőzés jelei, egy másik nézőpontból esztétikai minőséget kap és onnantól kezdve akár már örülhetünk is neki. Bennem ez a nem túl bonyolult gondolat fogalmazódott meg, amikor installáltuk a munkát a műteremben. 

Nemrég kaptam a fotókat Berlinből az elkészült katalógusról, a dokumentációkkal benne. Aprólékos gondosság, odafigyelés, átgondolt és egyben nagyon érzékeny munka. Dalma munkáit itt tudod megnézni.
